The Gift of Spirit

By Angela Hutchinson

Long ago I didn’t know what the gift of spirit was.  I had no idea the depth of well being I could feel on this plane of existence.  For the most part we are on our own.  When we find God, we find the key that unlocks all of the secrets of the Universe.  Only they aren’t really secrets, more like Universal Laws.  We find out by trial and error how the World works.  Until we figure this out, we tough it out.  We walk into the proverbial wall so many times our heads hurt.  Then we blame everyone and every thing thinking that this will lessen our pain.  Only it doesn’t.

After unleashing our illusory control on the world we come to a point of giving up or surrender.  We can’t do it.  We could never do it.  And we will never be able to do it.  Alone that is.  Now, God enters.   We humble ourselves to the point of opening our hearts to some sort of alternative.  This is spirituality unfolding.  This is the Dark Night of the Soul and the promised Sunrise.  Spirit begins to unfold at just the right pace for our understanding.  Sometimes this isn’t comfortable, sometimes it's downright dumbfounding.  Sometimes its beyond words and sometimes it makes you cry out in joy.

Over the years I have tried to control my environment.  I have tried to manipulate it and twist it.  I’ve tried begging and bargaining.  I’ve given excuses for not trusting and I’ve spoken my doubt of God.  Until the wall cracked and the humility crumbled.  Surrender was the raw experience of just being present and being exhausted.  There are times I can’t even speak the words, much less offer my case to the heavens.  But there is no need.  There is no need for words or for bargaining.  God knows what you need when you need it.  God has a sense of your Soul’s communication.  Your intent is automatically understood.  Your life is inventoried and you are given what you need.  Sometimes we are not willing to see the line on the road.  Sometimes we’re not willing to give up control.  Other times we hand it all over.

As we mature and we learn more about how the Universe works, we begin to build trust and have faith.  We begin to feel the optimism of God.  We know more.  We release more.  We give more.  This is the gift of Spirit.  Spirit envelopes us with a sense of security in an insecure world.  Spirit loves us and we are open to the love, no longer drifting around unconscious of our metaphysical side.  Spirit guides us as we recognize that guidance is offered.  We open up to all things True.  Illusion is put aside and we learn about God and we learn about ourselves.  We begin to understand others and compassion is born.
